But even after I spent a bunch of time working it out and figuring out how to play the game, I found the underlying game was just incredibly boring - few actual decisions, lots of chaos, extremely repetitive. It was all about discover a (randomly generated) strongpoint, flank, infiltrate, lather, rinse, repeat ad nauseam. Because of the focus of the game on command, there was very little tactical detail. Unfortunately, the command decisions weren't very interesting either.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12654412977759874403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-914191259119493058.post-44836330193840427342012-02-03T01:08:49.015-08:002012-02-03T01:08:49.015-08:00Interesting article, great article in fact. I was surprised to see you list Fields of Fire as being "dire", when by all accounts, outside of a poor rulebook the game itself is supposed to present a fairly unique and realistic take on the actual feeling and activity of warfare with a high degree of immersion. I see that the reprint P500 hasn't passed yet, so are you talking about problems with an earlier version, an issue with the rules themselves, or the game in general?ldsdbombernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-914191259119493058.post-61610005146217462012012-02-02T11:16:59.828-08:002012-02-02T11:16:59.828-08:00Serves me right for commenting based on a game I d...Serves me right for commenting based on a game I didn't like in the first place :) I played FF several times early in 2011, I always felt that CC was a great *concept* for which I just didn't like how it worked out that much, and so FF might be a different take on the concept that I might like. For me though it had the same problems as CC - slow pacing, odd abstractions, not very evocative. FF was also very reminiscent of Clash of Heroes, and I just found CoH a lot tighter and more interesting (even though CoH isn't perfect either).Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12654412977759874403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-914191259119493058.post-45796832725871149722012-02-02T08:52:01.656-08:002012-02-02T08:52:01.656-08:00Funny, I like CC but I found FF tedious the one sh...Funny, I like CC but I found FF tedious the one shot I gave it.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12627081755365858901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-914191259119493058.post-33310466633594401052012-02-01T11:47:14.983-08:002012-02-01T11:47:14.983-08:00Bataan is a cool game, but it's tough to recom...Bataan is a cool game, but it's tough to recommend to a not-really-a-wargamer. It's fairly complicated (25+ pages of rules) and in many ways a fairly classic hex/ZOC/CRT wargame. It's cool because of the way it captures the close-in see-saw battles at the various defensive lines, a lot of attack and counterattack, and it gives the two armies (US/Philippine and Japanese) a good portrayal. The system focusses on coordination, the difficulties of coordinating different units and different assets, and I think it does a good job of that.

I have a few comments on BGG. The system in Bataan! is the same as Roads to Leningrad and very similar to Kasserine, but more of a cousin to Rommel's War or the Barbarossa series. One of the cool things for war gamers is that von Borries uses a lot of similar systems in his games, customized for the battles they are portraying and refined over the years, so even though they're individually complicated moving between them is not so hard once you get going.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12654412977759874403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-914191259119493058.post-64486652998423110542012-01-31T07:05:46.535-08:002012-01-31T07:05:46.535-08:00Can you write a few lines about Bataan? Given I'm an ASL(SK) player, and also someone who used to love Up Front! but eventually became frustrated with it, CC:E was going to be a tough sell for me. I think if it had taken an hour to play instead of 2.5, I would have been a lot happier with it.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12654412977759874403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-914191259119493058.post-40309357175115164442012-01-30T07:20:19.191-08:002012-01-30T07:20:19.191-08:00Chris -- do you have a review or commentary availa...Chris -- do you have a review or commentary available that explains why you're not keen on Combat Commander?
